The constellation of communication satellites - now featuring 75 satellites and scheduled to get 10 more later this summer - is created to support the "Internet of things", the technology behind smart devices. The Iridium network is comprised of six polar orbiting planes, each containing 11 crosslinked satellites for a total of 66 in the operational constellation.

The Iridium satellites will add to the 55 already in operation, as part of the NEXT network, which is focused on the internet of things (IoT).

Iridium CEO Matt Desch says the NEXT satellites are faster and the voice calls sound better.

On Sunday, July 22, 2018, SpaceX, a commercial leader in aerospace, successfully launched the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

Iridium Communications, in partnership with SpaceX, is prepping to launch 10 Iridium NEXT satellites.

Per Space.com, the Arianespace launch was planned to take place near the Atlantic coast of South America at Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

While SpaceX is working for NASA's manned spacecraft created to send astronauts to the ISS, it also works with other companies to send satellites to the Earth's orbit.
