Mars close to Earth USA: How to watch approach again”

The last closest approach was in 2003, when Mars was 34.6 million miles (55.7 million kilometers) from Earth "and the closest it had been in almost 60,000 years", said NASA.

The approach on Tuesday will make Mars brightest since 2003.

Astronomers around the world trained their telescopes on the sky on July 31, when the Red Planet was 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometers) away.

Like all other planets, Earth and Mars have elliptical orbits, meaning oval in shape.

It will be the year 2287 before it comes that close again, NASA reported.

Both pictures were captured when the planets were near opposition - when they are lined up with the Sun and Earth and at their closest to Earth for a given year - thus appearing brightest in the sky. With Mars and the Sun on either sides and Earth in the middle, the three celestial bodies will be in a straight line on Tuesday.

Mars will be at its closest distance to Earth in 15 years tonight.

On the evening of July 31, and the planet will be seen rising from the Gemini constellation in India and you will be able to see it with the naked eye.

"This may be responsible for a string of bright clouds visible near the northern polar region that are the remnants of a disintegrating storm", NASA wrote.

If you're having a good look out of the window you need to look to the southwestern sky and it should be visible low on the southwestern horizon with the moon shining to the upper left, according to Space.com.

One of the proposed methods of pumping more Carbon dioxide into the Red Planet's atmosphere is by bombing the planet's poles.

The Griffith live stream was accompanied by the Observatory's astronomy experts who were on hand to guide the viewers through the event.

"Our results suggest that there is not enough Carbon dioxide remaining on Mars to provide significant greenhouse warming were the gas to be put into the atmosphere", said Dr Jakobsky from the University of Colorado and the lead author of the study, which was published in Nature Astronomy.

Mars will next be close to Earth in October 2020.
