Cat-calling man punches woman who called him out

Cat-calling man punches woman who called him out”

Posting the video on YouTube, Laguerre wrote in French: "This is unacceptable behaviour".

Marie, who was walking home, recalled how the unidentified man made "dirty noises, commented and whistled". He then doubles back towards her.

A French student has spoken out after she was harassed by a man in a Paris street and then hit in the face when she told him to stop.

In the video, one of the restaurant patrons got up and grabbed a chair, seemingly with the intention to hit the perpetrator, but changed his mind.

Speaking to Le Parisian, Marie said: "I felt hatred. So I said "shut up" as I walked away", she wrote. "I wasn't going to look down and certainly wasn't going to apologise".

Laguerre first shared her story in a Facebook post that included a video of the the incident which took place outside a cafe on Rue Burnouf, near Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the north east of the city.

"What's at stake is serious - it's the freedom of women to move about in freedom in public", France's equality minister, Marlene Schiappa, told the paper. Schiappa was the driving force behind new legislation that will impose fines of $105 to $878 for annoying, following, and threatening women.

"I do not tolerate this kind of behaviour".

She promised on-the-spot fines of €90 ($NZ150), or higher if the person is a repeat offender, will start being enforced this autumn, adding: "We are lowering the tolerance level". "But he had heard me and suddenly things happened suddenly".

According to the Guardian, the Paris prosecutor's office has opened an inquiry into the incident, but so far the attacker has not been identified. Now the video has gone viral, and Parisians - and French people nationwide - are outraged. To be fair, very few women report these kinds of incidents so it's hard to know how police would respond to 8,500 reports each day.

The student posted the CCTV footage online and reported the incident to police in a bid to take a stand against street harassment.

"But we need more than a change in the law - we need a culture change, and more provision and counselling for victims of sexual violence", she said.

The attack has triggered a national debate about the way women are treated on the streets of France.

The man, who has not been identified, is now being sought by French police. But for millions of women around the world, the idea that a harasser might become physically violent when confronted is not surprising at all.
