Google Working on Censored Search for China

Google Working on Censored Search for China”

Lastly, Google bowning down to the Chinese government is a huge win for the latter as it sets a precedent for smaller companies not to challenge censorship in China.

News website The Intercept first reported the story, saying the search app was being tailored for the Google-backed Android operating system for mobile devices. These may include phrases such as "human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest".

The Intercept said the project, code-named Dragonfly, has been in development since past year.

"That Google appears to be developing this censored version of a search engine in the midst of a harsh nationwide crackdown on human rights in China - with the consultation of senior Chinese government officials - is alarming", she added. It has reportedly been demonstrated to the Chinese authorities and might see a commercial launch within the next six to nine months.

The Great Firewall has meant that Google Search isn't accessible from within China.

"We provide a number of mobile apps in China, such as Google Translate and Files Go, help Chinese developers, and have made significant investments in Chinese companies like JD.com", spokesman Taj Meadows told AFP.

Last year, Google said that its second innings will resolve around Artificial Intelligence.

Once the platform detects controversial keywords, it will filter and block websites that are now prohibited from visiting in China, like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and effectively all adult entertainment content. But jumping back into China presents ethical issues for Google (GOOGL), which has long advocated a free and open internet. At the same time, there are over 750 million internet users there, which Google would love to gain access to.

The plan, which was criticized by human rights advocates, comes as China has stepped up scrutiny of business dealings involving U.S. tech firms including Facebook Inc, Apple Inc and Qualcomm Inc amid intensifying trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.

It came on Google's table in the spring of a year ago. Chief among the hurdles, Google would need approval to re-enter the search market from Chinese authorities, who now block.

It could make sense for the tech giant to reintroduce its search engine in China, considering the country is now the biggest internet market in the world.

The search app will also "blacklist sensitive queries" so that "no results will be shown" at all when people enter certain words or phrases, the documents state.

Google could be making serious concessions to the Chinese government to censor the Internet, a new report claims. They unveiled various bits and stages for Alphabet's possible censored search engine project, but the main source for the rumors seems to have originated in an Intercept report.

Sen. Marco Rubio and even some Google employees are among those criticizing the company. The relations between the tech giant and the Chinese government never really got better, and most Google services are still barred in China.
