Mobile, Nokia Partner on 5G Technology

Mobile, Nokia Partner on 5G Technology”

Nokia announced a $3.5 billion 5G equipment deal with T-Mobile for the deployment of a nationwide 5G network.

A statement from T-Mobile said Nokia would provide it with end-to-end 5G technology, assisting it to bring its nationwide 5G network to market for customers.

According to the terms of the deal, Nokia will supply a range of 5G hardware, software and services that will allow T-Mobile to deliver broad coverage using the 600 megahertz spectrum and ultra high-speed capacity on 28 megahertz airwaves in urban areas. This agreement may be an early sign that there investment in 5G future is now being recognized.

T-Mobile, which is controlled by Germany's Deutsche Telekom, is now battling regulators over its plans to acquire competitor Sprint, with its arguments largely focused on the need for more scale in order to invest effectively in 5G.

US wireless operators Sprint and T-Mobile announced earlier this year that they are merging to form a new company and push development of a super-fast 5G network. The company reiterated its previously issued outlook, which Nokia discussed on July 26 in conjunction with its second-quarter financial report.

The new 5G partnership with T-Mobile marks the largest gain by Nokia to-date, with Nokia touting the strength of its productive working relationships with other companies. End users will see these networks aid the adoption of virtual reality, augmented reality, driverless vehicles, medical monitoring, autonomous industrial services, and much more. The Finnish network-equipment vendor said last week that operators looking to build next-generation networks are pressuring prices as they try to fund the upgrades within their existing budgets.

"We are all in on 5G", said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer at T-Mobile. The deal would allow the combined entities to draw closer to the revenue volume of Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, which would remain the two largest USA mobile carriers.
