Sanedi calls on industry to move back Earth Overshoot Day”

Based on its latest estimate, humanity is now using nature 1.7 times faster than our ecosystem can regenerate, including food, timber, fibre and the absorption of carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels. This equates to using up 1.7 earths.

As a result of this overuse, fisheries are collapsing, freshwater is scarce, soils are being eroded and wildlife is vanishing, while the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is leading to climate change, more severe droughts, wildfires and hurricanes, the researchers said.

The use of the Earth's resources is at unprecedented levels, with humans using more and more each year.

"As we mark Earth Overshoot Day, today may seem no different from yesterday - you still have the same food in your refrigerator", said Wackernagel. On the other side of the world, residents in Cape Town have had to slash water consumption in half since 2015.

Humanity is now consuming the Earth's natural resources at around 1.7 times faster than they can be naturally replaced - essentially this means an increasingly unsustainable way of life.

"These are the consequences of busting the ecological budget of our one and only planet".

Earth Overshoot Day could be likened to a report card, and the worldwide non-profit organization Global Footprint Network is in-charge of calculating it.

One thing that can be easily done is reduce the consumption of animal calories.

Phosphorus, which is vital to the growth of plants, is also on the decline.

Between January 1 and August 1, humanity had consumed a year's worth of natural resources - making 2018 the earliest "Earth Overshoot Day" since records began 50 years ago.

To promote Earth Overshoot Day, Schneider Electric invited attendees to a digital webinar on July 24th, 5 pm CET/ 8 am PST, led by Xavier Houot and Mathis Wackernagel, to discuss new approaches to sustainable business thinking. Notable declines were seen in Singapore, the Bahamas, Denmark, United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) and France. To do so, it uses 15,000 data points collected by the United Nations for each country starting with 1961.
