Motorola Announces Moto Z3 With 5G Mod and Snapdragon 835 SoC

Motorola Announces Moto Z3 With 5G Mod and Snapdragon 835 SoC”

According to PCMag (citing Motorola engineers), the 5G Mod will act like "a data card connected to your phone" meaning it'll have its own SIM and subscription. On the camera front, it could feature a dual camera (12MP+12MP sensors) at the rear and an 8MP snapper upfront for selfies and video calling.

The Moto Z3 runs Android 8.1 Oreo.

The upcoming 5G Moto Mod - compatible only with Verizon Wireless, by the way - attaches to the back of the Z3, just like the 360-degree camera mod or external battery mod, leveraging the existing pins and magnets Motorola has used on the Z-line of smartphones for the past few years. Neither Motorola and Verizon are announcing many details about the 5G Moto Mod, so it's all a mystery for now.

Today Motorola has announced the Moto Z3 smartphone at a special event in Chicago.

After a lot of unnecessary hype, Motorola simply announced the Moto Z3 smartphone at its headquarters in Chicago yesterday.

Processor: The Moto Z3 is powered by Qualcomm's year-old flagship processor Snapdragon 835 chipset. The Moto Z3 arrives August 16 and will cost $480 at full retail or $20/mo with a device payment plan.

Motorola One Power and Moto Power, speculated to be the company's new Android One devices, were also expected to be unveiled at the event. The camera supports Laser Autofocus Color and Correlated Temperature (CCT) dual LED flash. The Z3 employs a stock-ish version of Android that has a navigation button that's reminiscent of the one Google added to the Android P beta releases. Further, it bears a water-repellent P2i coating that is touted to protect from spills and splashes on top of 6000 series polished aluminium frame. There's no word on when Motorola will launch Moto Power and Motorola One Power. The smartphone supports QuickCharge 4.0, which will give you half a day of battery life with just a 30-minute charge.

Externally, it's fair to say that the smartphone doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

In addition to those next-generation radios, the new accessory carries a 2,000-mAh battery to offset potential increases in battery drain. Between in-house work, efforts from longstanding hardware partners and upstart Mod creators, Motorola has made it clear that Moto Mods won't just disappear overnight.

Expect hands-on reviews, device versus device coverage, and other great Moto Z3 content in the hours and days to come. The 5G Moto Mod uses a Snapdragon X50 modem and "millimeter wave components" to offer 5G access on Verizon network. The 5G Moto Mod will be available later. There is now no information about the eagerly awaited Motorola One Power and the Moto One smartphones.
