PS Plus August 2018: Mafia III and Dead by Daylight

PS Plus August 2018: Mafia III and Dead by Daylight”

Software sales increased 5% year-over-year in Q1'18 although hardware sales were down 3% from last year.

Japan's Sony on 31st July reported a record first-quarter operating profit on the back of strong sales of gaming software, giving support to the new management's strategy of focusing on stable sources of revenue.

Net income also topped their prediction at ¥226.5 billion; the company raised its fiscal full-year forecast for net income by ¥20 billion to ¥500 billion.

The very slight reduction in terms of PlayStation 4 sold has not had an impact for what matters the future sales of the platform.

With the previous year's one-time gain of JPY 36.8 billion excluded, Sony logged even sharper first-quarter growth of 61 percent. These two games will be available at no additional cost to active PS Plus subscribers, as the titles can be downloaded for free on PlayStation 4 consoles starting on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.

This is stark contrast to April this year, when the company's Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida gave a rather pessimistic forecast for the full year, which sent Sony's shares plunging. The company generated an operating profit of ¥195 billion (~$1.7 billion), which was much higher than the projections of ¥145.5 billion (~$1.3 billion).

In May, Sony unveiled a USD1.9-billion deal to buy industry titan EMI Music Publishing, which has the rights to songs by the likes of Queen and Pharrell Williams.

It looks like both Microsoft and Sony will be having a great selection of free games for the month of August.

Sony also raised its outlook for sales to ¥8.6 trillion from ¥8.3 trillion, citing higher-than-expected video-game sales.

For the year to March, Nintendo maintained optimistic annual targets, forecasting net profit of ¥165 billion and operating profit of ¥225 billion on sales of ¥1.2 trillion. Sony expect to shift a further 17 million PS4 consoles by April of 2019.

Worldwide sales of the PlayStation 4, released in 2013, totaled 3.2 million units in the first quarter, down from 3.3 million a year earlier.
