Secretary of State Pompeo Meets with Turkey's Foreign Minister in Singapore

Secretary of State Pompeo Meets with Turkey's Foreign Minister in Singapore”

Cavusoglu said the ministers had discussed steps both countries could take to solve the existing problems. Their talks came after Washington imposed sanctions on two of Turkey's ministers over the trial of a U.S. pastor Andrew Craig Brunson accused of backing terrorism. "However, Turkey always wishes to resolve these issues via diplomacy, dialogue and mutual understanding", Cavusoglu told reporters after meeting his USA counterpart Mike Pompeo in Singapore.

Pompeo met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Singapore during a security conference in Southeast Asia. "It's pretty straightforward. Pastor Brunson is an innocent pastor and they need to let him a return to the United States".

"Brunson needs to come home, as do all the Americans being held by the Turkish government", Pompeo told reporters before the meeting.

The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan "should seize the Trump Towers", Aytun Ciray, general secretary of the Iyi (Good) Party, said to protest the White House announcement of sanctions on Turkey's interior and justice ministers.

"They've been holding these folks for a long time". Turkey has said the sanctions are unacceptable.

On Friday, the two leaders agreed to work together to resolve tensions between the two countries.

"We repeated to them that nothing can be achieved through threatening language and sanctions and we believe that this was well understood", Cavusoglu said.

On Wednesday, the White House announced that it was imposing sanctions on Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

Andrew Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for two decades, was swept up in a string of arrests in the wake of a failed military coup against Mr. Erdogan in 2016.

Under the sanctions to be imposed by the Treasury Department, any property, or interest in property, belonging to Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul or Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu within US jurisdiction would be blocked. He risks up to 35 years in prison if found guilty. The sanctions also prevent American citizens from doing any business with the two ministers. Ankara blames Gulen for the coup attempt, while the cleric denies involvement.
