First woman fined in Denmark for wearing full-face veil

First woman fined in Denmark for wearing full-face veil”

The 28-year-old woman had been involved in an altercation at a shopping centre north of Copenhagen, where another woman had attempted to remove her face veil.

The woman was slapped with a fine of 1,000 Danish kroner ($210) and requested to either remove the veil or leave the premises. They also told her to either remove her veil or leave the public area, but she made a decision to keep her headwear on.

"During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again", police officer David Borchersen told the Ritzau news agency.

Both women were charged with disturbing the peace. She chose the latter'.

Veiled women take part in a demonstration against the veil ban.

Police are going through surveillance video to determine if the other woman deliberately ripped off the niqab.

The law itself does not mention burkas or niqabs by name, instead stating that "anyone who wears a garment that hides the face in public will be punished with a fine".

Around 13-hundred people - mostly women - sported masks, niqabs and full-body burqas, as they marched, . despite the various penalties including an 120 US dollar fine for first-time offenders or up to six months in jail for repeated offences. If they do not comply with police orders, they will be handed a fine and sent home.

Other European countries have similar bans.

Civil liberties campaigners and Muslim women's advocacy groups have argued that the ban is discriminatory.

On Wednesday, Danish police allowed protesters of the ban to cover their faces to let them "express themselves freely", which has raised questions of hypocrisy.
