Ryanair nominates mediator to break deadlock with striking Irish pilots

Ryanair nominates mediator to break deadlock with striking Irish pilots”

The budget airline said the decision was driven by the "rapid growth of Ryanair's Polish charter airline. allied to a down turn in forward bookings and airfares in Ireland partly as a result of recent rolling strikes by Irish pilots".

Trade union Forsa, which represents the pilots, hit out at the airline company following the warning.

Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers agreed to recognise unions for the first time late previous year but negotiations since have faltered.

It pledged in December to recognise unions for the first time and while it has signed recognition deals in some markets, it has failed to do so in others and not yet reached any collective labour agreements.

Pilots in Ireland, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands have all voted to take industrial action, planned for next Friday, August 10.

Ryanair has limited the damage from the Irish strikes so far and said passengers on the 20 flights it cancelled from the 300 that flew in and out of Ireland on Friday were either put on another flight or refunded.

Some 20 Ryanair flights scheduled to fly between Ireland and the United Kingdom next Friday have been cancelled ahead of the day's strike, affecting around 3,500 passengers.

Ryanair's Kenny Jacobs said: "This 5th strike notice by FORSA is irresponsible, unwarranted and is disrupting customers and (a way of damaging) Ryanair's business and our share price".

"There is going to be disruption, it will be small, we will manage it".

"The recognition of trade unions and the regularization of the situation of pilots are not incompatible with efficient management in a low-priced company", SEPLA argued.

Ryanair, which operates from 86 bases in 37 countries and carried 130 million passengers last year, averted widespread strikes before last with a last-minute U-turn to recognise unions for the first time in its 32-year history.

Forsa should explain why, "when Ryanair has agreed nine of their 11 requirements, they call strikes rather than negotiate", the statement said.

Ryanair refused to say anything on the lawsuit, saying it did not "comment on rumour or speculation".
