The Europeans fleeing from the sweltering heat in the fountains”

UAE residents heading to Europe to escape the heat should be prepared for record summer temperatures sweeping the region which experts blame on global warming.

Latest weather prediction models by WX Charts show Europe's temperatures are forecast to be hottest in Spain, France and Portugal, where highs of 48C are possible.

"We're likely to see temperature peak at around 47C, that will challenge the national records for Spain and Portugal".

LISBON-Eight places in Portugal broke local temperature records as a wave of heat from North Africa swept across the Iberian peninsula - and officials predicted the scorching temperatures could get even worse over the weekend.

They add "Iberia is not the only place seeing high temperatures, in fact much of Europe will see a rise in temperatures by Friday". Fires in Greece, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Latvia have killed dozens of people and forced evacuations.

Portugal's Civil Protection agency reported 426 firefighters were putting out or checking fire alerts in the north and centre.

While back in the United Kingdom another blast of hot weather is set to hit Portsmouth and the South East.

Portuguese weather forecasters said the hot air from North Africa also brought particles of sand, which tend to subdue maximum temperatures slightly.

48 degrees Celsius is the current record, set in the Greek capital Athens back in 1977. The country went on high alert in an effort to prevent a repeat of the worst fires in history previous year, which killed 114 people. Temperatures reached 33 Celsius in west London on Friday but are forecast to drop going into next week.

In eastern Europe, Poland endured unusually high temperatures up to 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit), forcing its power plants to go into emergency mode to increase output due to the wide use of air conditioning and electric fans.

People refresh themselves in a fountain at Plaza de Espana, on a hot summer day in Sevilla, Spain on August 1, 2018. Fishery authorities in the canton of Zurich were combing creeks to rescue fish from suffocation as streams dry up or oxygen levels plunge.

'Combined with high pressure in charge, blue skies every day, and the ground already warmed up, that leads to a day-on-day build, combining to give us these intense temperatures'.

July's average United Kingdom maximum temperature was 22.6C from July 1-30, hotter than 1976's 21.6C, and the second-hottest since records began 108 years ago in 1910, behind only 2006's 23.2C.
