Jeep Wants to Ban Mahindra Roxor in US, Here’s Why”

Mahindra's North American division subsequently revealed the Roxor off-roader in March 2018 to appeal for the USA customers in farming sector and is positioned as an off-highway class of vehicle with go-anywhere characteristics.

The Roxor certainly looks a whole lot like an old CJ Jeep, but a key differentiation is that the Mahindra is not street legal.

But it seems all bets are now off for Fiat Chrysler, which drew the USA trade commission's attention to Mahindra's "substantial foreign manufacturing capacity combined with its demonstrated intention to penetrate the United States market and harm FCA's goodwill and business".

Jeep's parent company, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) has filed a Federal Trade Commission complaint against India's leading SUV marker - Mahindra & Mahindra in the United States. Mahindra has not yet been served with the complaint and we prefer not to comment at length on the dispute at this time.

According to Bloomberg, in a complaint lodged with the US International Trade Commission - not the US Patent Office - in Washington on August 1, FCA said the Mahindra Roxor infringed Jeep's signature design and provided photos to prove it. FCA said, "Mahindra capitalizes on the cost advantages of manufacturing their products in India and then importing knocked-down kits to the USA, where they're assembled in the Detroit area". "However, we have reviewed FCA's core filing and find it to be without merit".

Mahindra actually holds a license to build CJ-inspired vehicles and still sells them in India as the Thar.

Mahindra, however, hit back, pointing out to Bloomberg that the two automakers had a licensing relationship that dated back to the 1940s, including "the original agreement with Willys". The ROXOR has been in production in MI since March of this year, but it's not licensed for the road, instead aiming at side-by-side off-road all-terrain vehicles.

"Mahindra's 70-year automotive history has been forged by making authentic, rugged, purpose-driven vehicles; Roxor is the embodiment of this history and our brand", he said. "Mahindra has been co-existing with FCA for over 25 years in India and in many other countries", Rich Ansell, spokesperson for Mahindra North America, told the publication.
