South Sudan foes sign final power-sharing deal

South Sudan foes sign final power-sharing deal”

President Salva Kiir and key South Sudanese opposition leaders without exception have appended their signature on the agreements on governance on Sunday putting aside their concerns over the power-sharing and number of states.

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar shake hands during peace talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June.

The parliament will be comprised of 550 lawmakers, including 332 from Kiir's group and 128 from Machar's faction.

"The agreement we have just signed today must map the end of conflict and war in our country", Kiir said in a speech in English after signing the deal.

Sudan helped broker the agreement.

The minister told a press conference that the parties would not sign a comprehensive peace deal, as some of the South Sudanese opposition factions still have some reservations over the deal. "Where will I get this?" said Kiir.

But on Sunday the top USA envoy to Khartoum said the United States still backed the process.

A similar peace deal was signed in 2015 but fell apart a year later in a deadly battle that saw Machar flee into exile. Sunday's deal is the 12th ceasefire and second power-sharing agreement.

President Kenyatta commended the Republic of Sudan for the progress made and reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to the restoration of peace, security and stability in South Sudan.

"This agreement I am sure will not collapse because the people of South Sudan have agreed to make peace between themselves", Kiir said.

The new country plunged into civil war, including fighting within the national army, fuelled by the deep enmity between the two leaders.

Kiir, who is of the Nuer minority ethnic group, accused Machar, a member of the Dinka majority, of plotting to assassinate him and occupy the first magistracy, triggering the conflagration that has cost the youngest country on the planet tens of thousands of dead and wounded and the forced displacement of millions of people.
