Opelousas General Health System Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week & National Breastfeeding Month”

Breastfeeding helps the baby's physical and intellectual development, protects mother's health by helping early involution of the uterus, reduces postpartum bleeding, and thereby prevents anaemia, along with many other ailments. The activity highlighted the most common reason for a breastfed baby not gaining weight and explained to participating mothers and medical staff how to deal with this issue. Although there's no doubt that safe infant formula is essential for some families, we also need to acknowledge that the industry's aim is to increase market share, not to promote infant health.

Now that mothers can nurse their babies in public in all 50 states, maybe more moms will be encouraged to breastfeed their children up until six months, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Breast milk is made of fats, sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and enzymes and is created to promote brain and body growth. Dr Nirmala Chandrashekhar, Consultant Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Gynaec Oncology at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals said, "Early initiation, that is, breastfeeding from the first hour of birth ensures that infants consume the colostrum, which is the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth".

A child is being breastfed by the mother. Thus, here are a few exclusive breast feeding tips to do it right.

The theme of 2018 Breastfeeding Week, 'Breastfeeding: "Foundation for Life" is very fitting as breastfeeding especially exclusive breastfeeding is a win-win for all - baby, mother, family and society.

Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Executive Director of the SBFO, said, "Our main message with the Sharjah Baby-Friendly Project is to promote breastfeeding and encourage pregnant women and mothers to commit to it, due to its proven benefits".

Sincerely, this is very desirable as it will support the mother practise exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of the baby's life.

Experts have claimed that lack of confidence may affect the production of breast milk in mothers.

We also need to realise that bottle feeding has become so normalised that many women seeking to breastfeed are missing out. "Mothers' milk has living antibodies that protect the baby from getting sick".

World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) confirm that breastfeeding contributes to reducing child mortality rates. Supportive healthcare systems, adequate maternity leave entitlements, workplace interventions, counselling and educational programmes can all help to improve breastfeeding rates.

"Breastfeeding also plays an important role in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals for motherhood and childhood". Breastfeeding prevents malnutrition and has also irreplaceable role to decrease child mortality, Dr. Belaynesh said.
