Zverev reaches ATP Washington semis; Murray withdraws

Zverev reaches ATP Washington semis; Murray withdraws”

The Brit was due to play young Aussie Alex De Minaur in a quarter-final on Friday but Murray decided against competing due to exhaustion.

Murray has played three sets in each Citi Open match (best of threes), and he's played for over 2 1/2 hours every time.

The returning Scot also announced his withdrawal from next week's Rogers Cup in Toronto in order to recover.

The No. 1-seeded Zverev defeated 10th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals Saturday. "I don't think I should be put in a position like that, when you're expected to come out and perform the next day".

The three-time major champion, coming back from hip surgery, finished his most recent match at 3 a.m. Friday and chose to withdraw rather than play again so soon afterward.

"I'd like to thank the tournament for a wildcard, I always love playing in Canada and look forward to returning next year", Murray, a three-time Grand Slam victor, said. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

All tennis fans rejoiced at his pain-free movement and fitness levels shown to win three such draining matches.

Rain throughout the week pushed action back and led to Murray exiting the tournament.

"I've played quite a few matches this week in Washington and I need to be smart with my rest and recovery, as I come back from injury".

But despite that three-hour battle, the 31-year-old was expected to face Australian De Minaur again today (1.20am United Kingdom time) for a place in the final four. I don't think it's reasonable. "And I'm disappointed with that, because I know that the weather's tricky and I know it is for the scheduling, but it's a very hard position to be in".

De Minaur was given a walkover into the semi-finals of the hard-court tuneup for the US Open.

Tsitsipas reached his first career ATP final in May at Barcelona, losing to Rafael Nadal.

The match eventually finished at 3am on Friday morning and Murray shed tears into a towel for several minutes courtside as the emotion of the moment overcame him.

The match was held up by rain on Thursday with the pair tied at 4-4 in the second set and, although Boulter won that to level the match, American Kiick took the decider for a 6-4 5-7 6-1 victory.

On the women's side, two-time Grand Slam victor Svetlana Kuznetsova was to face Kazak eighth seed Yulia Putintseva for a semi-final spot.
