Alex Jones 'hasn’t violated our rules — Twitter CEO”

However, he tried to circumvent this ban by live streaming content on other platforms, leading the site to terminate his account permanently.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Tuesday explained the site's decision not to suspend conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, breaking with several other top tech companies.

Facebook suspended Jones' account for 30 days on Monday due to repeated violations, includings posts that it said glorified violence and dehumanized others.

The social network announced Tuesday that it would not ban Alex Jones or InfoWars from the site, noting that neither are now in violation of its rules.

A number of platforms have reached a different conclusion, as the crackdown on Jones intensified this week.

As of this writing, InfoWars is now the fourth most popular free app on the Apple App Store, beating CNN, the New York Times, Google News, HuffPost, and dozens of other mainstream news outlets.

Twitter/RealAlexJonesThe drive to keep Alex Jones off the major online platforms may have had some unintended consequences-at least temporarily.

In a similar move, Spotify also removed all the episodes of Jones' The Alex Jones Show after removing selected episodes last week. Dorsey said the company was committed to promoting "a healthy conversational environment" - which included Jones.

Pinterest also removed the InfoWars account. This marks a contrast with the approach of Facebook, which has rolled out a set of fact-checking initiatives, including the use of machine-learning tools to prevent the spread of debunked stories.

Dorsey further explained/admitted that Twitter has "been awful at explaining our decisions in the past", but the platform refuses to "succumb and simply react to outside pressure" by banning Jones like most other digital platforms.

"Truth is we've been bad at explaining our decisions in the past".

Senator Murphy rejected the criticism, arguing that restrictions on free speech by companies could not be compared to government censorship and that the case of Jones - who is a controversial figure standing accused of endorsing conspiracy theories and bullying - would not lead to more cases of online censorship of popular voices.

Dorsey said he wanted Twitter to avoid succumbing to outside pressure but instead impartially enforce straightforward principles "regardless of political viewpoints".
