Boris Johnson told to apologise for burka jibe”

Naz Shah has written to International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who is also Women and Equalities Minister, and Tory party chairman Brandon Lewis over Mr Johnson's comments.

The party chairman, Brandon Lewis, called for Mr Johnson to apologise, while his former deputy, Alistair Burt, a Foreign Minister, condemned the remarks as "offensive".

Burt told the BBC that Johnson had been defending Muslim women's right to wear the religious dress.

She suggested the Mr Johnson take part in "training and engagement with the Muslim community" and accused his party of having "an issue with Islamophobia" while pointing out Theresa May had not responded more than 24 hours after the publication.

Describing the Government's response, he added: "It's not acceptable, the fact of the matter is the relationship with Muslim communities is extremely poor with this Government and at a time when many members of the Muslim community are feeling targeted and are being targeted, the fact is the community wants reassurance centrally from 10 Downing Street".

Lumping the former foreign secretary in with ex-English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson and a group described as fascists who stormed a left-wing bookshop, John McDonnell called for a campaign of resistance.

Mr Mughal criticised the "sheer flippancy in which it was made".

"Women should have the freedom to choose how they dress", May told reporters in Scotland on Tuesday in comments confirmed by her office.

The same piece said the city had made scapegoats of the police in the Hillsborough disaster while refusing to acknowledge the part played by "drunken" fans "mindlessly" trying to fight their way in - comments which caused outrage in the city.

"I would go further and say that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes".

"That reassurance should be coming quickly and effectively".

Sayeeda Warsi, a former co-chair of the party and author of a book on Islamophobia, told Channel 4 News he was as using Muslim women as "a convenient political football to increase poll ratings amongst the Tory faithful".

"I don't know whether this is his agenda to get the leadership of the Conservative party". Boris Johnson's comments weren't accidental, they were a calculated attack in a national newspaper, made weeks after he reportedly met with Steve Bannon.

Johnson came out against calls for a ban on the face-covering veils in public places - but compared their wearers to rebellious teenagers.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the comments were Islamophobic and "dog whistle politics".

Denmark introduced a burka ban last week, with fines of about 1,000 krone (US$155), following similar moves in France, Austria and Belgium.
