Eleider Alvarez stuns Sergey Kovalev to seize WBO light heavyweight title

Eleider Alvarez stuns Sergey Kovalev to seize WBO light heavyweight title”

The card at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City drew a sell-out crowd of 6,000.

Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs), 35, a Russian Federation native living in Los Angeles, hopes a victory will lead to a unification fight so he can begin reclaiming the rest of the belts he lost to Ward.

"I don't wanna take anything away from what Alvarez accomplished", Duva said. But by the end of the sixth, Alvarez was bleeding from a cut just under his left eye. At that point the referee moved in and called an end to the fight with 15 seconds left in the round. Kovalev is simply not the same fighter he was.

"I feel OK. Thank you everyone, thank you very much to all the fans around the world for your support", Kovalev said. Duva said Kovalev has a rematch clause in the contact and could face Alvarez again soon.

You can forget about that all-Russian showdown between Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol for the unified light heavyweight championship. Sergey was dominating and Alvarez came back and stopped him.

Welterweight Enriko Gogokhia (7-0, 3 KOs), 27, a southpaw from the Republic of Georgia fighting out of Los Angeles, got in six rounds of work in a shutout of Ronald Montes (18-10, 16 KOs), 32, of Colombia, in an action-free fight. But Alvarez proved to be an accurate counter-puncher willing to exchange whenever Kovalev got close. When Ward retired and vacated his titles last fall, Kovalev regained one of his old belts in his first fight back by knocking out Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in the second round in November. Alvarez is an unbeaten prospect, who has bided his time - and often been forced into that by the WBC - taking in all that has taken place around him as he has patiently waited for his opportunity.

It wasn't until the fourth round when Kovalev tried to exert his power, landing several hard punches that tested Alvarez's chin.

Meanwhile, the result derails plans for a light heavyweight unification bout between Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol, who retained his World Boxing Association belt with a unanimous decision over Isaac Chilemba on the same card. After all, Alvarez was amid a 13-month layoff because Stevenson hasn't faced him despite being Alvarez his mandatory challenger for some sanctioning organization or another - starting back in 2015 (!) - a reminder that, when convenient for the wallets of the powerful, nobody is really forced to do anything by these fraudulent outfits. "He's hungry for this fight and for a victory", Kovalev said of Alvarez. "His punches were not as hard as they were in the beginning of the fight".

Alvarez stated, "I wanted to show him I'm strong, I have a good chin, and I'm ready for big things ... we practiced that punch during training camp, and that's how it went ..." Alvarez rocked Kovalev with a huge right hand that sent the champ staggering backwards and down to the mat. It was only the third time he went the distance, winning easily on the scorecards, 120-108 twice and 116-112.
