Johnny Depp’s Notorious B.I.G Film Has Release Date Pulled

Johnny Depp’s Notorious B.I.G Film Has Release Date Pulled”

City of Lies, the Brad Furman-directed crime thriller starring Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker and based on the true story behind the investigation into the murder of rap star Notorious B.I.G., has been pulled off its September 7 release date. Now, the film's eventual release date is up in the air. Lawyers on both sides of the lawsuit are currently hashing out negotiations in an attempt to settle, but as of now, no new release date has been specified by distributor Global Road.

While it's possible that the movie is simply being delayed at the last minute to hunt out a more strategic release window, it's also quite feasible that the movie won't see release in theaters at all, instead being shifted to a more low-profile streaming release, a la Netflix's The Cloverfield Paradox.

The film had a hard production process with Depp allegedly assaulting a crew member, former location manager Greg "Rocky" Brooks, on set in Los Angeles. It stars Johnny Depp as detective Russell Poole and Forrest Whitaker as reporter Jack Jackson.

"While Global Road is pulling its film, at least for the time being, Warner Bros.is going full steam ahead with the November tentpole Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, whose ensemble cast includes Depp". The crew member also claimed that he was sacked from City of Lies after refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement that would've prevented him from suing Depp. In July, he settled a multi-million dollar lawsuit with his former business managers for "gross misconduct".

Depp has also faced continued blowback over allegations that he had physically assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard in 2014.

Depp, who faced accusations of domestic violence in his divorce from Amber Heard, past year generated controversy for another film he's attached to, "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald".
