Rick Gates Forced Into Admitting Extramarital Affair by Paul Manafort’s Lawyer

Rick Gates Forced Into Admitting Extramarital Affair by Paul Manafort’s Lawyer”

Gates said it was money he took from Manafort that was unauthorized, but the answer wasn't enough for Downing. "We don't plan on doing that, but we plan on questioning him about what we call his, you know, separate secret life and how ... it relates to money he had stolen, embezzled, and things that he was doing, but specifically as to infidelity, we do not think we're going to get into that".

Prosecutors had intentionally left many of these pieces of evidence blank on an itemized list of documents they are presenting in court, signaling they could be the most sensational and attention-grabbing files in the evidence binder. Gates was indicted on similar charges to Manafort, which were dropped after he agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges of conspiring against the USA and lying to the government officials in exchange for this testimony.

Gates was hired by Manafort to serve as deputy campaign chairman and later had a role on Mr Trump's inaugural committee.

While Gates and others have pleaded guilty, Manafort has refused to strike a deal and legal experts say he may be holding out hopes of a pardon from Trump.

As Manafort came under pressure to pay his bills, he was forced to seek loans, the court heard.

Gates admitted to a litany of crimes Tuesday as Downing, Manafort's lead defense attorney, hammered him for enriching himself on his boss's dime, executing tax evasion and bank fraud schemes of his own, and lying to the special counsel's investigators.

In applying for a loan from Banc of California, Gates said the income from Manafort's company was inflated by $6 million.

Earlier on Tuesday, the prosecution had continued to question Gates, who described how millions of dollars were allegedly funnelled from entities controlled by Ukrainian businessmen into Manafort's shell companies in Cyprus. Manafort's lawyer Kevin Downing asked in the courtroom.

Downing wondered aloud why Gates had shown "perfect recollection" during examination by the government but was now much less precise under cross-examination by Manafort's defence. "In reality, it was basically money moving between accounts", Gates said.

The case has little to do with either man's work for the Trump campaign and there's been no discussion during the trial about whether the Trump election effort co-ordinated with Russian Federation - the central question Mueller's team has tried to answer. Gates also worked on the campaign.

Gates, who was working on Trump's transition team, testified that Manafort had suggested Stephen Calk as a candidate for Army secretary two weeks after Trump was elected. He said he followed Manafort's directions in failing to disclose the overseas accounts to federal tax authorities as required by law.

The face-off between longtime business associates and former senior members of the Trump campaign drew scores of people who waited in line for hours outside the courthouse and then jammed into both the courtroom and an overflow room that contained a video feed of the proceedings.

The 46-year-old former political consultant told jurors how Manafort asked for tickets to Trump's inauguration so he could give them to a banker involved in approving a loan at the center of his financial fraud trial.

The tax and bank fraud charges in the current trial - the first of two Manafort is scheduled to face - however, have nothing to do with Manafort's work on the Trump campaign.

Gates also said Mr Manafort had directed him to report money wired from his foreign bank accounts as loans to reduce Mr Manafort's taxable income. "WTF", Manafort wrote in an email to Gates, according to testimony, after learning accountants had added liabilities.

Manafort and Gates were the first two people indicted in Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

In another heated exchange, Downing tried to press Gates into explicitly saying that he had embezzled money from Manafort. Manafort broke his stare only to review government exhibits on a small monitor in front of him.

He had also lied in a deposition in a civil case against Mr Manafort involving a private equity fund.
