Samsung sends 4TB QLC SSDs into mass production”

He added that 4-bit terabyte-SSD products will now rapidly spread throughout the entire market.

However, Samsung's 4-bit 4TB QLC SATA SSD maintains its performance levels at the same level as a 3-bit SSD, by using a 3-bit SSD controller and TurboWrite technology, according to the company.

Though Samsung has high hopes for this new 4TB SSD. HotHardware said the 1TB model "performed well" at low queue depths and "actually finished near the top of the pack in 4K QD1 transfers", while PCWorld praised the drive as the "best of the bargain NVMe SSDs", save for a concerning drop in write speeds in situations most users are not likely to encounter.

Samsung's foray into SSDs started in 2006 with its 1-bit single-level cell SSD which have 32GB capacity.

Samsung then followed through on its promise this week with the announcement that it has begun mass producing the industry's first 4-bit QLC 4TB SATA SSDs specifically designed for consumers.

The company says that when data stored within a memory cell is bumped up from three bits to four, maintaining optimum performance and speed becomes "considerably more hard". While we probably can't expect this 4TB SSD to be cheap, Samsung does say that it will also be introducing 1TB and 2TB 4-bit QLC SSDs later this year. Each one will also come with a three-year warranty. Samsung hasn't announced specific pricing, but 4-bit cells should narrow the gap a little.

Samsung boasts that its QLC SSDs will improve efficiency for consumer computing, including in smartphone storage where the 1TB four-bit V-NAND chip will allow it to efficiently churn out 128GB memory cards for smartphones. The 2 and 4 TB drives will still be a bit spendy, but the 1TB tier should offer a solid price advantage over current 1TB solid-state drives.
