Four more dead from Ebola in DR Congo

Four more dead from Ebola in DR Congo”

Ebola is suspected to have caused as many as 33 deaths during the latest outbreak of the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the health ministry said.

In the latest outbreak, declared last week, 43 people are believed to have been infected in North Kivu province, including 33 who have died, the United Nations health agency said.

The experimental vaccine, which is manufactured by Merck, proved successful during its first wide-scale usage against the outbreak of Zaire virus in Equateur Province that began in April and was declared over on July 24.

"The goal of this communication is therefore to request you to enhance your surveillance systems and preparedness and have a high index of suspicion for Ebola, urgently report any alerts to Public Health Emergency Operation Centre on Toll free phone line 0800203033 and/ or Ministry of Health on 0800100066", Dr. Mwebesa noted.

Congo's health ministry says there are 30 probable cases of Ebola, and 13 confirmed cases, including 3 deaths.

Barthe Ndjoloko, who oversees the health ministry's Ebola response, said officials are working round-the-clock to identify those who may be infected.

North Kivu borders Rwanda and Uganda and trade activity fuels heavy movement across the borders.

Three healthcare workers have been struck down by Ebola, of whom one has died.

In a statement, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization regional director for Africa, stated that the organization has a head start on dealing with the illnesses because it is just coming out of a previous Ebola outbreak, so the people and equipment are still in place.

Dr Derek Gatherer, a virologist from Lancaster University, warned the outbreak earlier this summer was "reminiscent" of the 2014 Ebola pandemic.

That outbreak was about 2,500 km (1,553 miles) from the current outbreak.

"This is an active conflict zone".

This region north of North Kivu province is already threatened by armed groups including the fearsome Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) who have terrorized Beni for several years.
