How drought relief actually ends up punishing Australian farmers”

When pop star Rihanna tweeted Turnbull and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in February, asking them to help the Global Partnership for Education earlier this year, Bishop's department nearly immediately coughed up a $90 million pledge to support the education of foreign children.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the Government stood ready to help farmers as drought conditions worsened.

"We are, as we have all said, the land of droughts and flooding rains, but we haven't had a drought this bad for a very, very long time, since the Bureau of Meteorology says 1965", The Australian newspaper quoted Turnbull as saying during a visit to the central western region of New South Wales.

"It's vital that we help farmers and families that are dealing with the stress and pressures drought brings", Simson said in a statement on August 5. The state government of New South Wales has also provided more than A$1 billion in assistance for farmers.

He reaffirmed Australia's commitment to reducing carbon emissions after former prime minister Barnaby Joyce said the government's action would do nothing to stop droughts.

The first families to get the cash will be those already on an existing modest welfare payment worth up to $295 a week called the Farm Household Allowance (FHA).

When Malcolm Turnbull had a private meeting with the six-member Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the government handed over a donation of nearly half a billion dollars without the body so much as asking for it and no tenders called.

"Parts of western and southern Queensland have been in drought for more than six years, which has overwhelmed even the best efforts of producers to prepare", he said. And, he says, there is "more to come".

"It has been extremely heartening to see Australians rally around our farmers and rural communities during these tough times", he said.

"The money will help farmers deal with what are challenging times at the moment and help them manage and improve their production systems once we get through this drought".

In June, Federal agriculture minister David Littleproud announced a review of the Farm Household Allowance, which provides help for farmers facing hardship during drought.

The Federal Government says another phase of drought support will be announced in coming weeks.
