Napolitano: Judge in Manafort Trial Showing an 'Extraordinary Bias' Against the Government

Napolitano: Judge in Manafort Trial Showing an 'Extraordinary Bias' Against the Government”

In his second day of testifying against his former boss, Mr Gates said at the time he worked on President Trump's election campaign, his salary was paid by savings and investments from Mr Manafort.

He's also had several heated exchanges with the attorneys from special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

Also on Wednesday, an Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant, Morgan Magionos, told jurors bank records from Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United Kingdom revealed the accounts were connected to Manafort and his associates.

IRS agent Michael Welch told a jury that Manafort's unreported income includes foreign wire transfers to USA vendors like landscapers and clothiers, wire transfers to buy property, and income improperly reclassified as loans. Prosecutors had previously said that Manafort's interactions with Calk were the only part of the trial expected to overlap with his Trump campaign role. "I made a mistake". Laporta was given immunity from prosecution for her testimony.

"While the firm believes that her actions were related only to work she performed for Mr. Manafort, and that no other client was affected, a detailed, independent internal review is being conducted to confirm that her activity was isolated", the firm said in the statement. According to trial testimony, he used the accounts to receive millions of dollars in payments from Ukrainian oligarchs.

Litman said he believed the indictment was hard to put together - "but once put together, a pretty straightforward case to prove".

The questioning is part of the Manafort defense strategy of presenting Gates to the jury as someone who lies and can not be trusted.

"In Cyprus, they were documented as loans". He has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank fraud, tax fraud and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis has repeatedly prodded them to move swiftly while seemingly giving the defense more latitude.

"I understand how frustrated you are", Ellis said to Greg Andres.

Gates said that Manafort asked him to meet with one of the Ukrainian businessmen involved in paying him millions of dollars to find out if one of the shell companies used to pay him was a "clean entity".

In one example, Manafort and Gates emailed each other copies of a doctored profit and loss statement they later sent a bank to help Manafort obtain a loan. "I have taken responsibility".

The judge then brought the trial to a standstill late Tuesday afternoon, calling a brief recess. "Right now, it seems clear that it's the prosecution that should be specifically requesting that instruction from the judge in advance, as Judge Ellis has had some unusually cutting words for the prosecutors in this case".

Manafort also falsely classified another $1.5 million in income as a loan, Welch testified - while adding that Manafort never indicated he had foreign bank accounts on his tax returns.

Neither man was charged in connection with their Trump campaign work, but the trial has nonetheless been a distraction for a president who insists Manafort was treated shabbily and who continues to publicly fume about Mueller's investigation into potential ties between his associates and the Kremlin.

Gates faced a thrashing to his reputation from lead defense attorney Kevin Downing on Tuesday and Wednesday as Downing sought to undermine Gates' credibility as a witness. And he lied to special counsel investigators after striking a plea agreement with them.

That's what longtime Manafort deputy Rick Gates told jurors on his third day of testimony in his former boss's financial fraud trial.

Prosecutors had braced for the tough questioning by getting Mr Gates to come clean about his own crimes.

Downing's smear of Gates may not matter if jurors think the documentary and email evidence prosecutors presented lines up with Gates' testimony.

Cindy Laporta exits the U.S. Attorneys Building in Alexandria, Virginia.

"They may not like him".
