Dolphins receivers Stills, Wilson kneel during anthem”

In Miami, Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn raised his right fist and teammates Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson took a knee during the song.

Goodell announced the new anthem policy ― which requires players to "stand and show respect for the flag and anthem ― in response to the growing number of National Football League players who were joining Kaepernick's movement to spread awareness about racial injustice, sparking controversy nationwide". There were no apparent protests by the Buccaneers.

Many NFL teams played their first preseason games on Thursday after a highly controversial offseason focused on the league's response to players who protest during the national anthem.

In July, the NFL chose to suspend its new anthem policy which required all players on the field to stand for the national anthem.

"As a black man in this world, I've got an obligation to raise awareness", Quinn was quoted by the AP as saying.

Stills has routinely knelt for the anthem during his time with the team.

"The NFL has been engaged in constructive discussions with the NFL Players Association regarding the anthem and issues of equality and social justice that are of concern to many Americans". Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the team discussed the topic and chose to support individual decisions. The Daily News said Eagles captain Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback De'Vante Bausby raised their fists.

"For Malcolm, I don't want to put words in his mouth, but when you talk about symbolic protests or whatever, or drawing attention to causes through symbolism, I think you have to go back and forth because you're like, 'well this isn't moving the needle necessarily, it's about action.' But Malcom can always rest assured that he's taking action and he's working working in the community like a lot of these guys are doing".

Jenkins met with Reverend Jesse Jackson when Jackson visited the team this week.

However, that policy, announced in May, was put on hold last month when the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed to suspend enforcement of the new rules.

The section said fines or suspensions could potentially be handed out to players who kneel during the anthem.

"Meanwhile, there has been no change in the NFL's policy regarding the national anthem".
