Dozens killed, including children on a bus, in Yemen air strikes

Dozens killed, including children on a bus, in Yemen air strikes”

It was not immediately clear whether the bus was the target of the air strike, but coalition spokesman Col Turki al-Malki said the attack was "a legitimate military action, conducted in conformity with worldwide humanitarian law". The coalition entered Yemen's civil war more than three years ago to fight northern Houthi rebels who seized power away from Yemen's internationally recognized government.

The alleged attack left one Yemeni resident dead and 11 civilians wounded, said Maliki.

The Huthi' Al-Masirah TV reported that 39 people had been killed and 51 wounded, "mostly children".

An official in Saada's medical office, who wished to remain anonymous, told Middle East Eye the air strikes killed 47 people with 77 more wounded, and that number was likely to rise.

"(The air strikes) conformed to global and humanitarian laws", the coalition statement said, quoting spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki.

The health ministry run by the rebel Houthi movement said 43 people were killed.

On Wednesday night, Col. Al-Maliki stated that at (20:34) the Coalition Air Defense detected a ballistic missile launch from Northern Amran in Yemen, aimed at Saudi Arabia.

Images broadcast by Houthi media showed scores of bloody children, some still wearing their backpacks as they were loaded onto stretchers.

"Grotesque, shameful, indignant. Blatant disregard for rules of war when bus carrying innocent school children is fair game for attack", Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said in a Twitter post.

Global aid agencies denounced the attack and the loss of civilian lives.

The "Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen" said it had carried out a legitimate military action in the area targeting Houthis responsible for a deadly missile attack on Jazan on Wednesday.

"The [Saudi-led coalition] will take all necessary measures against the terrorist, criminal acts of the terrorist Iranian-Houthi militia, such as recruiting child soldiers, throwing them in battlefields and using them as tools and covers to their terrorist acts", Saudi military spokesman Turki AlMalki said in a statement.

The Iran-aligned Houthis regularly fire into Saudi Arabia and have targeted its capital, Riyadh, with ballistic missiles.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack in a statement released by his spokesperson, saying he "expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims".

ICRC said one of the hospitals it supports was treating the wounded.

The following year, a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the conflict. The coalition denied that it had carried out air strikes in the area, and blamed the deaths on rebel mortar fire.

So far, almost 10,000 people have died in the war in Yemen, which has unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

In another video, which appears to show the immediate aftermath of the strike, several lifeless bodies of children lay under a blown-up bus.
