Saudi Arabian Airlines Suspending Flights To and From Canada

Saudi Arabian Airlines Suspending Flights To and From Canada”

"We would encourage the government of Saudi Arabia overall to address and respect due process" Ms Nauert said.

The issue that led to this diplomatic impasse involves Saudi police arresting human-rights activist Samar Badawi and others last week.

Saudi Arabia has expelled Canada's ambassador, recalled its own envoy and cut off trade ties with Ottawa after the United States neighbor denounced a crackdown on rights activists in the kingdom.

On Monday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir criticised Canada's calls to free arrested civil society activists as a position built on "misleading" information. Hariri later rescinded the resignation, widely believed to be orchestrated by Riyadh, and returned to Beirut.

The kingdom asked on Monday the Canadian envoy to leave the country and recalled its ambassador from Canada. It wasn't immediately clear if he was in the kingdom.

On Tuesday, Saudi's main state wheat agency told traders it had stopped buying Canadian-origin wheat and barley.

Riyadh shot back, lashing out at what it described as "a blatant interference in the Kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic worldwide norms and all global protocols". "And of course, Irving sells most of its product into the United States, not Canada", he said. Media reports also suggest Saudi Arabia may cancel thousands of scholarships for students attending school in Canada. The Saudi foreign ministry has also launched special operations room to follow up with Saudi students in Canada following measures to transfer them from the country's universities.

You may not be too surprised to learn that all the brouhaha started in the Twitterverse.

Among the arrested is Samar Badawi, an award-winning women's-rights activist who sought to abolish the country's male guardianship laws.

He has introduced a raft of headline-grabbing reforms, such as lifting the ban on women being allowed to drive. Women still need a male guardian's permission to travel overseas and to marry. Saudi Arabia announced it was suspending future trade with Canada and severing diplomatic ties.

The Saudi foreign ministry singled out the words "immediately release", calling the phrase "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states". You know, like the images of 9/11/01 terrorist attacks in NY, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania that are forever burned into our memories at the hands of Saudi Arabian citizens.

Though the image was deleted, screenshots of the tweet were quickly shared.

A Twitter account linked to the Saudi government posted an image showing a plane flying towards the skyline in Toronto. Screenshots last forever, though.

On Monday evening, the airline, Saudia, made the announcement on its Twitter account that it was suspending flights from the 13 August. "The world has many alternatives in terms of supply, and Saudi Arabia continues to be a smaller proportion of that supply". Investors are skeptical, given rash actions like these toward Canada.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed al Jubeir said there's nothing to mediate in its dispute with Canada and that "Canada knows what it needs to do".
