Twitter trolls President Xi Jinping after China blocks Winnie the Pooh movie

Twitter trolls President Xi Jinping after China blocks Winnie the Pooh movie”

While the Chinese censor board has not furnished a reason for the film's denial, reports suggest that comparison between President Jinping and the amicable cartoon character, who has become a symbol of political dissent, might be the reason behind it.

The Guardian reports it all started when Xi visited the U.S. in 2013, and an image of Xi and then president Barack Obama walking together spurred comparisons to Winnie - a portly Xi - walking with Tigger, a lanky Obama.

This is because bloggers and activists have been using pictures of Winnie the Pooh and likening them to the country's President Xi Jinping.

In 2014, a photographed handshake between Xi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was matched with an image of Pooh gripping the hoof of his gloomy donkey friend Eeyore.

In June, Chinese authorities blocked HBO after "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver highlighted Xi's sensitivity over being compared to Winnie the Pooh.

Government censors has been erasing the images that mocked Xi on social media.

The live-action film, which premieres in India on August 10 released worldwide this Friday except in China.

But the country also has an annual foreign film quota set at 34 movies.

The movie stars Ewan McGregor as a grown up Christopher Robin who is reunited with his childhood friends for another adventure.

No official reason for why the film was denied release has been given by the Chinese Film Board, but it could be because the famous creation of AA Milne, Pooh, has been juxtaposed next to Chinese leader Xi Jinping in viral memes shared across social media.

In 2015, an image showing Xi in a parade vehicle and, next to it, an image of Pooh sitting in a toy auto became the most censored image of the year, according to Global Risk Insights.
