United States jury orders Monsanto to pay $289m in Roundup trial

United States jury orders Monsanto to pay $289m in Roundup trial”

One of the UK's largest DIY retailers is reviewing the sale of Roundup weedkiller products amid mounting concerns about their use, after a United States jury found the herbicide had caused a terminally ill man's cancer.

Mr Johnson's lawyer, Brent Wisner, said the jury's verdict showed that the evidence against the product was "overwhelming". "Hopefully, this thing will get the attention it needs so folks can make a good choice".

The groundsman's lawyers said he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014, having used Roundup and a similar Monsanto product, Ranger Pro, in large quantities while working for a school authority.

Monsanto in a statement said it would appeal the verdict.

On Friday (Aug, 10), agricultural company Monsanto was deemed liable in a lawsuit filed by Johnson, who alleged that Roundup caused his cancer.

He said: "Roundup has been safe for four decades and will continue to be safe". "This won't cure DeWayne Lee Johnson's cancer, but it will send a strong message to a renegade company".

"This jury found Monsanto acted with malice and oppression because they knew what they were doing was wrong and doing it with reckless disregard for human life", said Robert F. Kennedy Jr, a member of Johnson's legal team.

In one instance a hose broke and the weed killer soaked his entire body.

Johnson was awarded a total of about $39 million in past and future losses, both economic and noneconomic, but it was the $250 million in punitive damages that seemed to take the courtroom's breath away, as a sigh was heard on a video recording when Bolanos made the announcement.

On its website, Monsanto describes its offerings as "crop production products such as Roundup®herbicides, that enjoy a risk-free history in more than 100 countries". California added glyphosate to its list of chemicals known to cause cancer. But Partridge said hundreds of scientific studies and government agencies have concluded that its Roundup weed killer doesn't cause cancer.

The latest annual report of Monsanto's India unit states that its brand Roundup maintains market leadership with sales of around Rs 185.66 crore, which is 28 percent of its net sales of Rs 667.44 crore in FY18.Roundup is primarily used in agriculture and places like roadsides, public spaces, railway tracks and gardens.

Dressed casually, Johnson had a brief exchange with his lawyer when that figure was revealed, then bowed his head as another one of his lawyers patted him on the back and whispered to him.

After labeling glyphosate a "possible human carcinogen" in 1985, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reversed its position on the chemical in 1991.

Public liability lawyer at Maurice Blackburn, Dimi Ioannou, said the findings of the U.S. case would make glyphosate "a long-standing issue".

Jurors in California's Superior Court determined that Roundup contributed to Mr Johnson's cancer and said the company should have provided a label warning of the potential health hazard.

A Californian jury said Monsanto should have warned users about the dangers of its Roundup and RangerPro weedkillers.
