Kavanaugh Hearing Date Set for September 4 in Senate”

Kavanaugh's views on executive power and the legality of a special counsel investigation have become one of the top issues as senators debate his nomination to the Supreme Court ahead of hearings scheduled for after the August Senate recess.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) announced Friday the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

White House spokesman Raj Shah praised Grassley for his review of Kavanaugh's career and the upcoming hearings.

He further touted the nominee as a mainstream judge with a record of "applying the law as it is written".

"Every day, Republican obstruction of Kavanaugh's record gets worse and worse", said Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader on Thursday.

Grassley said Friday there's "plenty of time" to review the documents but added it's time for Americans "to hear directly" from Kavanaugh. Grassley's aides have said they expect to release more of those papers on a rolling basis.

But Grassley noted in his announcement that his team has reviewed thousands of pages of Kavanaugh's judicial opinions and records from the White House legal service, and the timeline still provides room for review of additional documents.

If he is confirmed, Kavanaugh would take over the seat vacated by Anthony Kennedy, who retired at the end of July.

He has met privately with nearly all the Republican senators and one Democrat as supporters try to build momentum for confirmation.

Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and Sen.

Kavanaugh will face questions Wednesday, Sept. 5, followed by testimony from and legal experts and people who know the judge.

On Friday, Schumer blasted Grassley's decision to announce a confirmation hearing as a "mad rush" amid the ongoing dispute over Kavanaugh's records. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, last month. The process, he said, has been "open, transparent and fair".

Grassley has previously said Kavanaugh's vetting process is probably the "deepest dive" ever conducted on a Supreme Court nominee. "They seem to be more frightened of this nominee's record and history than any we've ever considered".

The schedule is typical for a high court nominee, but because Kavanaugh, 53, spent five years working in the White House during George W. Bush's administration, Republicans and Democrats continue to feud over what could be more than 1 million pages of documents.
