Trump Threatens Tariffs on Canadian-Made Cars”

Canada would have to wait on a trade deal due to "tariffs and trade barriers" but the making progress with Mexico, President Donald Trump tweeted Friday night. But he threatened Canada with auto tariffs if the USA and Canada can't forge a deal.

After a second day of meetings with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in Washington, Guajardo said talks were "advancing" but that it was not clear how long it would take to settle US-Mexico issues before Canada would come back to talks.

He said any deal with Mexico must take care of American autoworkers and farmers, but he praised the new president of Mexico, calling him "an absolute gentleman".

Both Mexico and Canada want to maintain a trilateral pact, while Trump has threatened to pull out and negotiate separate bilateral agreements.

"Deal with Mexico is coming along nicely".

Adam Austen, a spokesman for Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, who is leading NAFTA trade talks for Canada, said the minister was in regular contact with her Mexican and USA counterparts.

At the close of the 3rd consecutive week of discussions in Washington, Guajardo said a deal was still possible by the end of the month.

A US-proposed so-called sunset clause that would kill a NAFTA deal unless it is renegotiated every five years has been another major stumbling block in the talks.

The automotive officials said that Mexico had sought reassurances that new content rules would not cause losses of existing facilities or jobs in the sector and that a NAFTA deal would make Mexico immune to any automotive tariff Trump imposes on national security grounds.

In response, Canadian officials announced "dollar for dollar" retaliatory tariffs, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called them at the time, to the tune of over C$16 billion in USA imports.
