Jack Whitehall plays first openly gay Disney character

Jack Whitehall plays first openly gay Disney character”

Disney will feature its first gay character in a movie in the upcoming film Jungle Cruise.

The film is based on the Disneyland ride of the same name and now stars The Rock and Emily Blunt, with Whitehall joining to play Blunt's gay brother. However, there is controversy around the casting as the character will be played by Jack Whitehall, a straight man.

Actor Ethan Harvey tweeted: "If only there were gay actors who could play "camp" as well as Jack Whitehall".

Based on a Disneyland theme park ride, Jungle Cruise, released next October, follows travellers who take a riverboat adventure through a "supernatural" jungle filled with risky animals and reptiles.

Representatives for Disney and Whitehall have been approached for comment. While some hold firmly to the stance that actors should be allowed to play characters who are different than themselves, many have pointed out that the problem isn't with Whitehall portraying a character. "Fail! This ship should sink".

Many other commenters praised the casting, focusing on the positive in the role existing and that many gay actors have played straight parts.

The Australian describes herself as "gender fluid" and some suggested a lesbian actor should play the character.

Scarlett Johansson stepped down from playing a transgender man in the film Rub & Tug, following concerns that the casting was insensitive.

Another person added: 'Straight people playing gay camp characters is offensive.

Chris Salvatore, an actor and singer, wrote: "Such a damn shame it's so hard to find gay actors to play gay roles in Hollywood". "Now straight actors are getting PAID to "play gay".
