Bridge collapse latest; Trump's Central Intelligence Agency row; and Madonna turns 60”

At war with current and former intelligence officials since before he was elected, Donald Trump Wednesday moved to strip Barack Obama's CIA chief of his security clearance, though worse may be in store for John Brennan, says Ray McGovern.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Brennan engaged in "erratic conduct and behavior".

She also claims he's "leveraged his status" to make unfounded allegations.

Brennan has been extremely critical and outspoken about the president's conduct, for example, calling Trump's performance at a joint press conference last month with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland "nothing short of treasonous".

The move against Brennan came a day after the former Central Intelligence Agency director denounced Trump in a tweet for his criticism of Omarosa Manigault Newman, the former White House aide who wrote a book critical of the president.

Former intelligence officials typically retain their security clearances so they can continue to be consulted by subsequent administrations on matters of national security.

Reacting to Sanders' announcement, Reines fired off a series of unhinged tweets, including one in which he labeled President Trump a "vindictive little bitch".

He said in a statement: "Once again this president is sending a message that he will punish people who disagree with him and reward those who praise him".

When asked why the list included only former officials who have publicly criticized Trump, Sanders said, "if we deemed it necessary, we would certainly look into" others. "Such access is particularly inappropriate when former officials have transitioned into highly partisan positions and seek to use real or perceived access to sensitive information to validate their political attacks".

"And I think people ought to think seriously about that", Clapper insisted. Mr Comey has said that he no longer has security clearance.

At least temporarily, this drew cable news coverage away from former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, her tell-all book and the president's insult-laden response to it, which had been dominating the airwaves for days.

"Normally ex-high officials, as a courtesy their clearances are kept active", Rostow said.

Brennan quickly hit back, accusing the president of trying to curb free speech in a "politically motivated" action that he said should "gravely worry all Americans".

Brennan's thesaurus-heavy Tweets and self-righteous grandstanding have made him a hero to the anti-Trump #resistance.

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy said Mr Brennan had "been totally political" and had "given the national intelligence community a bad name".

Some suggested Trump might have grander, and more nefarious ambitions: he could be testing the waters on stripping Mueller of his security clearance.
