Judge: 'Well-planned conspiracy' to kill Kim Jong-nam

Judge: 'Well-planned conspiracy' to kill Kim Jong-nam”

Malaysia's High Court on Thursday (Aug 16) ruled that two women accused of assassinating the half-brother of North Korea's leader will continue to face trial - in a blow to their families who insist the pair were tricked into carrying out the dramatic hit.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong were being accused of smearing VX nerve agent on Kim Jong Nam's face in an airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong are accused of smearing VX nerve agent on Kim Jong Nam's face past year.

The two women said they had been paid to carry out what they thought was a prank for a reality TV show.

Indonesian Ambassador Rusdi Kirana told reporters outside court that he was shocked by the court's decision but his government will abide by it.

Azmi said he "cannot rule out that this could be a political assassination", but found no concrete evidence of one.

Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was killed in Kuala Lumpur airport. "I just hope they will announce her innocent so that she can return home".

If there is, the trial - which started in October past year and has heard from dozens of prosecution witnesses - will continue with the court hearing the women's defence. In Vietnam, responding to Thursday's events, her father, Doan Van Thanh, said, "I don't know what to do next".

Mr Kim, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un, had been waiting to board a flight to Macau on 13 February previous year when two women approached him in the departure area.

He said the prosecution had proven all elements in their case. Ms. Huong, 30, and Ms. Aisyah, 26, have said they were duped by a group of four North Koreans who orchestrated the killing and fled hours later, abandoning them to suffer the consequences.

"The judge can not ignore the evidence before him".

He said Ms. Huong and Ms. Aisyah were seen in airport security footage appearing calm before the incident and then seemed uneasy with their hands afterward.

The four North Koreans, who South Korea has said are intelligence operatives working for Pyongyang, left Malaysia immediately after Mr. Kim's death and were later placed on an Interpol wanted list at Kuala Lumpur's request.

"The onus is on the accused to explain their conduct", Azmi said.

Defense lawyers say the killing was politically motivated, with many key suspects linked to the North Korean embassy in the Malaysian capital, suggesting the women were simply pawns.

The estranged relative of Kim Jong-un died in a matter of minutes.

Kim Jong-nam (L) had spoken out publicly against his family's dynastic control of North Korea; Kim Jong-un had reportedly issued a "standing order" for his half-brother's assassination in 2012.

Kim, the eldest son in the family that has ruled North Korea since its founding, had been living overseas for years after falling out of favor.
