Coconut oil is 'pure poison,' says Harvard professor

Coconut oil is 'pure poison,' says Harvard professor”

Adding coconut oil to everything won't make it healthier.

The 50-minute German-language talk, titled "Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors" debunks the popular belief that the ingredient is a waistline-slimming, brain-boosting superfood.

Registered Nutritionist Laura Thomas has also previously questioned the health benefits of coconut oil.

Coconut oil has taken the health world by storm for the last few years with fitness and nutrition fans hailing it a healthy fat.

In a speech given at the University of Freiburg in Germany, Dr Karin Michels suggested the oil isn't deserving of its healthy reputation, due to it containing high levels of unsaturated fatty acids.

Their official recommendation states, "For people who need to lower their cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends reducing saturated fat to no more than 5 to 6 percent of total daily calories".

For certain health food shops and wellbeing sites it is the panacea that helps everything from bad hair and mental grogginess to obesity and haemorrhoids.

2015's favourite superfood has been slammed by a Harvard Medical Professor saying, "even lard is better" than the "pure poison".

"We are well and sufficiently supplied", she said.

Increasing the amount of saturated fat in diet according to the AHA as well as the NHS, could raise the risk of coronary heart disease and raise the levels of LDL and triglycerides or bad cholesterol in blood.

When it comes to cooking, experts recommend olive or rapeseed oil as alternatives given they contain more unsaturated fatty acids.

According to the AHA report "The Skinny on Fats", the new guidelines urge consumers to limit both saturated and trans fats.

The AHA found that replacing saturated fat intake with polyunsaturated vegetable oil greatly reduced the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, similar to the numbers achieved by prescribed drug treatment. "What makes it of interest is the nature of fatty acids in coconut oil". "The overall effect has misled the public on the science of dietary fats".

"Coconut oil is about 86% saturated fat, about one-third more saturated fat than butter", said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation.

The proponents of coconut oil often point to the healthy lifestyles of indigenous populations in India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Polynesia, whose diets include large amounts of coconut.
