1st case of flesh-eating STD reported in England

1st case of flesh-eating STD reported in England”

A rare sexually transmitted disease that causes flesh-eating ulcers on the infected person's genitalia has been in reported in England, according to the Lancashire Post.

The CDC reports that donovanosis is very rare in the US but common in tropical and developing areas like the Caribbean, New Guinea, India, central Australia and southern Africa.

"In the absence of treatment the disease may spread locally and cause lymphoedema and genital mutilation", according to a study in the Journal of Sexually Transmitted Infections, as referenced by Newsweek.

Chemist 4 U pharmacist Shamir Patel was quoted by the Lancashire Post as saying: "This is a very rare and nasty condition and it could be one of the first times it has been recorded in the UK. The lesions are highly vascular (i.e., beefy red appearance) and bleed". According to past searched by the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), there have been no such recorded cases of Donovanosis in England on record.

The source appears to be an online pharmacy that submitted a Freedom of Information request to hospitals across the United Kingdom inquiring about STD rates in the country, according to Newsweek.

Occasionally, the infection can spread to the pelvis, internal organs, bones and even the mouth, according to the CDC.

STD Donovanosis affects twice as many men than women, and its first symptoms occur between one and 12 weeks after the infection was contracted. If untreated, it can cause scarring, discoloration and permanent damage to the genital tissue. Donovanosis is also a risk factor for HIV transmission. Dr. O'Farrell writes that the incubation period is approximately 50 days.

While "good news" is a relative term when discussing an infection that causes your genitals to be consumed by flesh-eating ulcers, anyone afflicted with the condition will be pleased to know that Donavanosis can be treated with a course of antibiotics and that, when caught early, the flesh-eating part can be avoided.

Azithromycin "can be given intermittently, the total pill count is low, directly observed therapy is possible and treatment can usually be stopped before ulcers have healed completely", states D.

Other antibiotics used to treat donovanosis include doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
