Australia’s ‘accidental prime minister’ Scott Morrison promises stability”

Scott Morrison was installed as Australia's seventh prime minister in 11 years Friday after a stunning party revolt against Malcolm Turnbull, which the new leader admitted had left the government "bruised and battered".

In the end, Morrison won an internal ballot 45-40 over former home affairs minister Peter Dutton. Turnbull did not stand for re-election and said afterwards he would be resigning from his parliamentary seat.

"With that being said, I think it's also brought a lot of people together and I'm optimistic that we'll make the changes needed to bury the ugly side of history again".

Members of Australia's conservative Liberal Party are meeting at Parliament House to choose a new prime minister.

Turnbull scraped through 48-35 when challenged by Dutton, but it was apparent he had been fatally wounded.

Morrison will therefore need to find a way to meet Australia's commitment to reduce emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 under the Paris accord without stoking old divisions, a challenge Turnbull said would be hard.

Trump lashed out at Turnbull during a call shortly after taking office past year, reportedly badgering and eventually hanging up on the Australian leader.

Today, August 24, 2018, Turnbull stepped aside and did not recontest after the party voted for a spill in the leadership. While Dutton has promised to work with the moderates, some analysts believe the divisions are too great.

Mr Turnbull became the fourth prime minister dumped by own party since 2010 in an extraordinary period of political instability that frustrates most Australians.

From the outset, a Peter Dutton victory would have been hard for the Liberal party to push to the public.

A hardliner on social issues, Morrison was criticized by the United Nations in 2014 for insisting that the children of asylum seekers be detained while their residency claims were processed. "We will provide the stability and the unity and the direction and the objective that the Australian people expect of us", Morrison told reporters.

Australia's next prime minister, Scott Morrison, is seen by some as an incongruous mix of a committed Christian who made his name through ratcheting up a refugee policy that many church groups have condemned as inhumane.

On social issues, Morrison has stood to the right of the more moderate Turnbull, and opposed the legalisation of same-sex marriage past year.

He stressed that the policy had stopped the tide of boats and prevented people from drowning at sea when they undertook the long, treacherous journey to Australia. One Nationals legislator has already said he will sit on the cross-benches, and possibly support the opposition.

"A change of government federally, at an election sooner rather than later, is likely".

As the political turmoil in Australia heated up on Thursday, a popcorn company sales manager from America received a whirl of notifications buzzing on his phone.
