State Department updates Mexico travel warning; Cancun advisory remains the same”

Travel warnings have been issued to tourists visiting Mexico after eight bodies - including two dismembered bodies in plastic bags - were discovered in the resort city of Cancun.

The travel advisory issued Wednesday calls for visitors to exercise increased caution in Mexico because of crime. The warning does mention that most of these homicides appear to be targeted, but fights between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by USA citizens and bystanders have been injured or killed in cross fire.

According to The Associated Press, officials from the prosecutors' office for the state of Quintana Roo said the bodies of two men were found in plastic bags and the bodies of a man and woman were discovered in an abandoned taxi Tuesday.

None of the killings happened in the beachside hotel zone of the vacation hot spot.

The State Department says that according to Mexican government statistics, the Cancun area is experiencing an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. "The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico as U.S. government employees are prohibited from travel to these areas".

For tourists who are traveling to Mexico, the State Department recommends travelers use toll roads when possible and avoid driving at night.

"Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred", noted the advisory.

A travel advisory has been issued by the United States government for Mexico.

Exercise increased caution due to crime. However, the government has not gone as far as telling people to reconsider traveling there.

On Tuesday, Mexican authorities found a fifth body of a man who had been bound and shot.

The advisory also urges US citizens to avoid certain areas outright. U.S. citizens travelling to the country are being advised to use toll roads and avoid travel at night. - Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.

There are five Mexican states that are on the State Department's "Level Four: Reconsider Travel" list - along with the likes of war-torn countries like Syria or risky regimes like North Korea's.
