Senator John McCain Remembered for Courage, Service, Patriotism

Senator John McCain Remembered for Courage, Service, Patriotism”

After a 2005 tape surfaced amid the 2016 presidential election of Trump talking about sexually assaulting women, McCain withdrew his support of the Republican nominee.

"Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018". He was severely injured and taken prisoner.

A steady stream of friends and colleagues had come to bid him farewell at his Arizona ranch in the months since his cancer diagnosis, in July 2017. "But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict".

He had recently announced his decision to discontinue treatment. "Honey and I send our prayers to Cindy and the entire McCain family". "Now, we're going to do what we can, get the best doctors we can find, and do the best we can".

"A life lived embodying those truths casts a long, long shadow".

And so began a long, hard year for McCain and his family.

Jon Biden, the former Vice President of the U.S. chose to highlight in his tribute what made Mr McCain overcome the many challenges that had characterised his life: country and spirit.

McCain's daughter, Meghan McCain, penned a heartfelt tribute to her dad. Biden's son Beau died in 2015 after fighting glioblastoma. He was 81 and had been battling brain cancer.

Known as a "maverick" by some, the senator was often at odds with his own party.

Since December, he never returned to the Senate as he underwent treatment in Arizona, where he kept a low profile, issuing written statements on major news developments but offering the public few glimpses of his condition. The dramatic move shocked his fellow Republicans, who thought repeal was a done deal.

"Before I leave, I'd like to see our politics begin to return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history from the history of other nations". "I will always treasure the constant friendship he showed to the people of Israel and to me personally". "I ask you, what should we be looking for in our next president? Even in times of political turmoil such as these, we share that awesome heritage and the responsibility to embrace it".

A US Senator since 1986, Senator McCain was the most senior and most trenchant Republican critic of President Donald Trump.

In a memoir published in May, McCain wrote that he hated to leave the world, but had no complaints.

He frequently criticized other Trump administration policies, including the decision to prosecute all those who illegally crossed the border to enter the USA - a policy which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the border. He chooses a virtually unknown governor as his running mate: Alaska's Sarah Palin.

"And to me, he was a friend whom I'll deeply miss".

He attended 20 different schools on his way to graduating from a private boarding school in Virginia in 1954.

John McCain fought in Vietnam war and was captured and imprisoned in 1967.

The force of the ejection was so violent, McCain broke his right leg and both arms. State law does not require that an election for a vacant Senate seat take place this year, says Eric Spencer, director of election services for the Arizona Secretary of State. A pilot, he was shot down over Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years. On the ground he was beaten and stabbed with a bayonet by North Vietnamese soldiers.

But it would be another two years before McCain first emerged onto the national stage.

He suffered, as the nation suffered, from the morass of Vietnam. He served in the Navy from 1958 until 1981, ending his career as a decorated captain with awards such as the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He was elected to Congress in 1982 and to the Senate four years later, replacing the retired Barry Goldwater.

There has been speculation Ducey would appoint McCain's wife, Cindy, to his seat, according to Politico.
