Coconut oil is pure poison, says professor

Coconut oil is pure poison, says professor”

Dr. Karin Michaels from Harvard, who is also involved in research in the field of tumors at the University of Freiburg, in his speech on German television called coconut oil pure venom.

If you're anything like us you've been slathering coconut oil pretty much everywhere recently.

Last year, the American Heart Association released a report, advising that consumers should avoid excessive coconut oil consumption.

Translated by Business Insider, Michels argues "coconut oil is more risky than lard because it nearly exclusively contains saturated fatty acids, ones that can clog the coronary arteries". In comparison, beef drippings contain more than 60% of saturated fat.

"There has been speculation that some of the saturated fat present in coconut oil may be better for us than other saturated fats, but so far there is not enough good-quality research to provide us with a definitive answer".

Distribution of coconut oil began in the early 2000s after two research scientists at Columbia University have shown beneficial effects of fatty acids contained in the coconut.

So, is coconut oil pure poison? Michels believes that the abundant saturated acids coconut oil is even "worse than lard".

Dr. Walter C. Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, agrees with his colleague Michels, saying there is no actual evidence of coconut oil's health benefits.

Despite coconut oil being considered as the most preferred form of cooking oil in many parts of the world, a Harvard professor has labelled it as "poison". A survey conducted in 2016 and published in the New York Times found that 72 percent of Americans think coconut oil is healthy, versus only 37 percent of the nutritionists that were polled.

While there is still a debate in the scientific community with regards to the effectiveness of coconut oil, users can still consume it in moderation but do not expect any miracle from the same.

"The more important thing to remember is the overall dietary picture", Sacks said.
