John McCain's farewell letter: 'Do not despair of our present difficulties'”

In 2008, McCain "was prepared to be president, but it was not his to have".

A proposal to rename the Russell Senate Office building after Arizona Sen. "And when they did get together, it was very clear they loved each other".

Instead, both the president and vice-president offered their condolences to the senator's family via Twitter.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Sen. Joe Lieberman, Graham and McCain were often referred to as the "three amigos" due to their close relationship.

But McCain and Trump were never able to bridge the gap between them.

NPR details the groups who implored the president to make the move, including the American Legion and the veterans group AMVETS; Politico has comments from Republican senators on the issue.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country", the statement said.

For years, the Arizona Republican said he wanted to be buried where it all began for him, at the Naval Academy cemetery, by his close friend, Navy Adm. Charles Larson, who died in 2014. And he did that time and time again, " Graham said. 'The flag is down'.

The renaming proposal would not need approval from the House or from President Donald Trump, a longtime McCain nemesis.

"But good, decent, honorable is John McCain", he said.

The request contrasts with the White House, which raised its flags back to full staff on Monday after lowering them on Sunday.

According to the Washington Post, Trump nixed the statement, despite calls from his senior aides, including press secretary Sarah Sanders and Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days.

John McCain emphasized the importance of unity among Americans and urged the country to not "despair of our present difficulties" in a farewell message prepared before his death.

"We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been".

McCain, a Vietnam-era war hero and senator since 1987, died Saturday afternoon, a year after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

His funeral ceremony will take place on Saturday at the National Cathedral, where former Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama are expected to deliver eulogies.

Over the weekend, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, ordered the Maryland state flag to be lowered to half-staff in honor of McCain until his burial on Sunday.

Davis choked up a several points as he read McCain's words.

As he was peppered with questions about McCain's legacy, the usually talkative president made no response. "When you go throughout the world people remember his concession speech as much as anything else". They choose to focus on that'. Tuesday on the Senate floor. "Because when you found yourself on the other side of that table, as I think all of us learned, you were in for a different kind of unforgettable experience", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in opening remarks.
