Legionella bacteria detected in Sands Resort water system

Legionella bacteria detected in Sands Resort water system”

Our partners at NECN report the order comes just days after 14 people who were in a specific area of Hampton contracted Legionnaire's disease. "The Health Department will evaluate the building's plumbing to look for evidence of Legionella bacteria in the building's water system", officials said.

Three people in Surrey, B.C. have been hospitalized with Legionnaires' Disease, a severe form of pneumonia that develops after being infected by the Legionella bacteria.

No one answered the phone at the hotel Monday morning.

The Legionella bacteria was detected from several water sources on the Sands Resort property, including the hot tub spa.

An order has been issued for the hotel to take steps to remove all traces of the Legionella bacteria from the facility.

One of them, an elderly man, has died.

In a release, Fraser Health said it is investigating the source of the bacteria. Test results are still pending for environmental samples taken from other locations in the affected area. A spokesperson said there have been fewer than 10 cases reported.

Legionnaires' disease symptoms are very similar to other types of pneumonia and can include a cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches.

Another disease which has made its presence felt for quite some time in the United States is the one caused due to West Nile virus, which has resulted in around a dozen communities in Boston-area being listed as high-risk, after a fourth-case of the virus was discovered. Yet, only a small fraction of people get sick from exposure to the Legionella baceria, health department officials said previous year, which typically afflicts those who are older, or who have weakened immune systems. It can not be transmitted between people, however.
