An Upset: Pressley Topples Capuano In Nationally Watched 7th District Race”

Ayanna Pressley, right, upset ten-term U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano in a Democratic primary Tuesday night.

Capuano conceded defeat to Pressley in the race to represent Massachusetts' 7th District approximately 90 minutes after the polls closed.

With no Republican on November's ballot for the district, Pressley is all but guaranteed to make history as the first black congresswoman from MA.

Capuano first won his House seat in 1998.

The diverse 7th district includes most of Boston, parts of Cambridge and Milton, and all of Chelsea, Everett, Randolph and Somerville.

"The district wanted a lot of change", Capuano said as he conceded.

"I am a survivor of sexual assault while a college student, " Pressley said at the City Council meeting. i "Mine is a truth shared by 17.7 million American women".

"If elected I will work with federal leaders to rehouse the non-immigration enforcement functions of ICE - including human trafficking and money laundering investigations - elsewhere in the US Department of Homeland Security, while immediately eliminating funding for enforcement and removal functions", she wrote.

Her victory marks the latest win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party this election cycle, and the latest win for a minority and female candidate over an incumbent or establishment favorite, following Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's shocking win over Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) earlier this summer and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum's (D) recent gubernatorial primary upset of former Rep. Gwen Graham (D-FL). Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley, sending her media attention in the final leg of her campaign. And Pressley has called the New Yorker "my sister in change". Pressley's positions are also very progressive. Unlike Ocasio-Cortez, who was running against a more moderate Democrat in Crowley, Capuano is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus with a solidly left-leaning legislative record.

However, there are significant differences between the two races.

Pressley hasn't accepted donations from corporate political action committees in her campaign.

Capuano also touted his years-long support for Medicare-for-all.

The Boston Globe, the region's major newspaper, gave Pressley their endorsement.
