Elon Musk calls British cave diver 'child rapist' in new claim”

Embattled Tesla CEO Elon Musk brought his campaign against a British rescue worker and cave diver to explosive new heights on Tuesday, accusing a man who helped save a youth soccer team from a flooded cave in Thailand of being a "child rapist", alleging without evidence that he married a 12-year-old "child bride", and calling a reporter a "f***ing a**hole" in a weird email exchange posted on Buzzfeed News.

In a recent rant to a BuzzFeed news journalist that Musk considered off the record, Musk once again claimed that Unsworth was a pedophile and that he had married a 12-year-old bride in Thailand.

The emails are the latest in a saga that began when Musk tried to help with the mid-July rescue operation of 12 boys and a coach from Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Thailand.

Musk called Unsworth a "single white guy from England who's been travelling to or living in Thailand for 30 to 40 years" and suggested he moved to Chiang Rai "for a child bride who was about 12 years old at the time". "There's only one reason people go to Pattaya Beach".

Mr Unsworth's lawyer Mark Kennedy from the firm Howard Kennedy told the BBC that Mr Musk's allegations were baseless.

"It isn't where you'd go for caves, but it is where you'd go for something else", Mr Musk wrote.

Unsworth had dismissed Musk's offer as a "just a PR stunt", and told CNN the device "had absolutely no chance of working", and that Musk could "stick his submarine where it hurts".

He asserted that the city was "renowned for child sex-trafficking".

"We see the medium-to-longer term industry backdrop as challenging for Tesla's products; this follows from an increasing number of EV launches from both traditional OEMs and other start-up competitors - at a time when the company's product cadence hits a gap", analyst David Tamberrino said in a note to clients Tuesday. "After deleting the initial accusation and tweeting an apology, Mr Musk has continued to republish his false and unsupportable accusation". The decision came after Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder Elon Musk took to Twitter indicating that the Palo Alto, Calif. -based company was weighing a take private deal.

Tesla shares fell 0.5% after-hours Tuesday, after closing down more than 4%.

The controversy comes at a time when Tesla and Musk continue to battle intense negative publicity and embarrassing controversies. He has since said the company will remain publicly traded.
