FDA: Do not eat, do not buy Honey Smacks cereal

FDA: Do not eat, do not buy Honey Smacks cereal”

All Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal was voluntarily recalled in June, but the FDA has issued an updated warning after people continued to become ill. Tennessee is included in that list.

According to the agency: "CDC estimates Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths in the United States every year". The BEST if Used By Date can be found on the top of the cereal box, and the UPC code can be found on the bottom of the box.

"Do NOT buy - retailers cannot legally sell", the FDA tweeted Tuesday.

In addition, the agency has advised the public to report any sales of the cereal to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their area. Check your home for it and throw it away or return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

The illness onset dates for the outbreak patients range from March 3 through August 7. "The FDA continues to collect information to determine any additional sources".

Those who store cereal that looks like Kellogg's Honey Smacks in a container without the packaging and may not remember the brand or type are also encouraged to throw the product away. If you have questions about cases in a particular state, please call that state's health department.

Reports of the illnesses go back to March.

Kellogg launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks immediately after being contacted by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding reported illnesses.

It is not clear how such vast quantities of Honey Smacks got infected, but it is not surprising to food safety specialists.

Kellogg said in the statement that it stopped producing Honey Smacks cereal and is offering refunds. Sick people should tell their doctors about their possible exposure to Salmonella because special lab tests are required to properly diagnose the infections. Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 72 hours of eating food contaminated with the bacteria. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. "Healthy individuals typically recover in four to seven days with treatment", USA Today reported.
