Former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore sues actor Sacha Baron Cohen”

Roy Moore, the former U.S. Senate candidate from Alabama, filed a $95 million United States lawsuit Wednesday, accusing Sacha Baron Cohen of defamation for duping him into appearing on the actor's Who Is America? television series on Showtime.

The lawsuit was filed in the federal court in Washington, D.C.

The filing demands a jury trial and seeks damages in excess of $95 million "and any other relief that this court may deem just".

"Defendant Cohen's character falsely and fraudulently introduced a false and fraudulent "device" supposedly invented by the Israeli Army to detect pedophiles", state the complaint. They say they were "induced... into this interview, which was "set up" to harm and thus damage" Moore and his family.

Moore says he was brought to Washington, D.C., to accept an award - a fake award, of course - for his support for Israel.

In the disputed sketch, Baron Cohen, disguised as a purported Israeli anti-terrorism expert Erran Morad, demonstrated what he said was a device for detecting pedophiles, which beeped when it came into Moore's range.

The lawsuit contends that Cohen "falsely painted, portrayed, mocked and with malice defamed Judge Moore as a sex offender, which he is not".

Representatives of Baron Cohen did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the lawsuit.

Running in heavily Republican Alabama, Moore lost his Senate race last December to Democrat Doug Jones after being accused of sexual misconduct toward female teenagers while in his 30s. He has denied the allegations.

This combination photo shows Sacha Baron Cohen, left, at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills, Calif. on March 4, 2018, and former Alabama Chief Justice and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore at a news conference in Birmingham, Ala., on November 16, 2017.

In one episode, former Arizona sheriff and Senate candidate Joe Arpaio argued the benefits of gun ownership to a tiny toy doughnut.

Baron Cohen has faced past lawsuits over similar pranks, but those actions faltered because the individuals had signed releases. The suit alleges that the release was obtained on fraudulent grounds. The interview has already seen the light of TVs and, as of this writing, is still up on YouTube.
