Burberry to drop real fur, stop destroying unsold goods

Burberry to drop real fur, stop destroying unsold goods”

"Our responsibility goals cover the entire footprint of our operations and extend to the communities around us", said chief executive Marco Gobbetti.

This great news comes after over a decade of campaigning by PETA and our global affiliates against Burberry's use of fur, including holding dozens of protests outside its stores around the world, sending tens of thousands of e-mails, distributing countless leaflets and posters, and even becoming a company shareholder in order to attend its annual shareholder meeting back in 2007.

Burberry plans to stop destroying unsold products after environmental groups and shareholders objected to the disposal of millions of pounds worth of goods. Burberry said it will increase efforts to reuse, repair, donate or recycle unsaleable products.

Burberry, Britain's largest luxury label by sales, revealed in its annual report in July that it had burned 28.6 million pounds, or about $37 million, of clothing and cosmetics. Many other companies in the retail and consumer industry, such as Louis Vuitton and Nike, also deliberately destroyed their inventory to prevent the devaluing of high-end price tags they can get in stores.

Britain's Burberry will no longer burn unsold luxury goods to protect its brand after an admission that it destroyed nearly US$40-million worth of stock a year ago sparked a furor over waste in the fashion industry.

Exane BNP Paribas analyst Luca Solca said Burberry's announcement could put pressure on other luxury names to be more transparent about how they handle unsold goods.

But after a customer backlash, Burberry announced yesterday that it will cease with immediate effect.

The retailer has started a partnership with sustainable luxury company Elvis & Kresse in the past year that will see 120 tonnes of leather off-cuts transformed into new products over the next five years.

The Burberry show is typically one of the highlights of London Fashion Week, which begins September 14. "We are committed to applying the same creativity to all parts of Burberry as we do to our products".

The British brand said there will be no real fur in its collection presented later this month, adding that it will phase out existing fur products.

"Substituting natural fur with plastic petroleum-based materials, like fake fur, is. neither luxury nor responsible and sustainable", he said in a statement.
