CBS Chief Les Moonves Was Reportedly Obsessed With Ruining Janet Jackson

CBS Chief Les Moonves Was Reportedly Obsessed With Ruining Janet Jackson”

And 14 years later, we find out CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves - Who's in charge of the Super Bowl - was on a warpath to ruin Jackson's career ever since. "The move had a huge impact on sales of her album Damita Jo, which was released in March 2004, just a month after the Super Bowl".

The 2004 Super Bowl halftime performance did not conclude so well for Superstar Janet Jackson, after singer Justin Timberlake ripped the fabric from her bustier, exposing her breast.

Moonves ordered MTV and VH1 (both Viacom properties) and all owned-radio stations to stop playing Jackson's songs and videos.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that CBS CEO Les... CBS and MTV (a subsidiary of Viacom, the parent company of CBS at the time), produced the show and were blasted for the malfunction and fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission. According to Ali, the CBS exec was convinced the moment was "an intentional bid to stir up controversy", and sources close to Moonves explained that he didn't feel Jackson was "sufficiently repentant" for the mistake. But Timberlake was allowed to perform after he tearfully apologized for the incident, according to conversations Moonves had with my sources. While Jackson's career was significantly damaged, Timberlake's flourished.

Though JT pulled her breast out, Jackson took all the blame and apparently, her apology did not match up to that of Timberlake's. Moonves was said to have told a source.

When Jackson got a Simon & Schuster book deal, which CBS owns, Moonves was reportedly pissed that her True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself slipped through and got a deal on his watch.

In fact, his tone about the book deal was so belligerent one source refused to speak on the record because he was "not interested in having that man following me to the grave and trying to screw me over the whole time". Moonves is now reported to be negotiating his exit from the broadcast conglomerate.
