Hawaii residents brace for impact as Hurricane Lane approaches

Hawaii residents brace for impact as Hurricane Lane approaches”

"We encourage all the people across the state to pay attention for this storm", Ige said.

"Just want to remind everyone to prepare to shelter in place 14 days of food and supplies and water", he said at a news conference.

Computer models mostly do not predict the storm to make a direct hit on the islands, which would be the worst-case scenario.

The storm could potentially bring "damaging winds and life-threatening flash flooding from heavy rainfall" to the islands, the Hurricane Center warned.

With emergency officials upgrading the severity of the storm's impact to Hawaii Island and Maui County to a Hurricane Warning, county civil defense agencies urged HIDOE to close campuses as a safety precaution.

Lane may also generate surf heights reaching as much as 7.5 metres, with "the potential for significant damage to coastal properties and infrastructure, including roadways".

"We have emergency food in the form of MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) and water that are now on all four counties of the state", he said.

CPHC stated "Major Hurricane Lane is passing roughly 280 miles south of the Big Island this morning and has started a turn towards the northwest in line with the Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecast".

She said two Hilo-area neighbourhoods were evacuated.

President Donald Trump urged residents to prepare for the storm, which was expected to bring torrential rains, high winds and unsafe surf.

While most hurricanes moving in from the east will struggle to maintain strength as they pass over the colder pool of water east of the Hawaiian Islands, the path Lane is projected to take - moving up from the south - gives it the best chance to stay organized, as warmer water does stretch closer to the islands on their south side. These areas are not accustomed to hurricane conditions. The watch indicates hurricane conditions are possible and that winds of at least 39 miles per hour are anticipated in the next two days.

Guests holding tickets for travel to Hawaii between now and August 26, 2018, can make a one-time reservation change free of charge.

Both airlines are waving fees for passengers who hope to reschedule their reservations.

The hurricane was about 465 miles (804 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu before dawn Wednesday and The National Weather Service extended a hurricane warning for Hawaii's Big Island to include the island of Maui.

While Lane's strength is expected to weaken slightly upon its approach to the Hawaiian Islands, it was still expected to remain a risky hurricane.

State offices on Hawaii island and Maui will be closed Wednesday through Friday.

The downpours could lead to landslides and flooding.

The model reveals Hurricane Lane's eyewall, the weather map surrounding the eye, as the Category 5 storm threatens to wreak havoc on the island.

Part of the reason hurricanes are rare in Hawaii is that the state presents a pretty small target in a very big ocean.

The National Weather Service said tropical-storm-force winds could begin as early as Wednesday afternoon on the Big Island.
